Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian is a Canadian-American feminist media critic as well as a public speaker. Feminist Frequency was established by Sarkeesian. It hosts video clips featuring commentary and analysis of gender representations in contemporary culture. Anita Sarkeesian a Canadian American media critic. Feminist Frequency is a non-profit educational website which investigates representations of women in the popular media narratives. Alongside working to highlight the problems surrounding the harassment and targeted attacks on women, others of minority groups in the online world, she is determined to break down stereotypes that are associated with pop culture. Sarkeesian holds a York University master's in social philosophy, political and philosophical thinking. In addition to being a well-known public speaker, she has given speeches at the TEDxWomen XOXO Conference and United Nations Broadband Working Group. Interested in issues concerning gender and feminism since an early age she launched her own website Feminist Frequency in the year 2009 when she was studying at the university. The determined young woman was slammed by the Internet for starting a web series on gender in videogames. The attack did not deter her instead it made her more determined to be a feminist media critic. In recognition of the many contributions she has made to feminist movements, she has been recognized with numerous awards. Anita Sarkeesian is an award winning media critic and the founder of Feminist Frequency an educational and non-profit organization which studies the portrayals of women within pop culture narratives.
